Between August and October 2025, road accidents in Rwanda’s Western Province claimed the lives of 26 people and injured over 330 others.
These statistics were highlighted during the National Police of Rwanda’s road safety campaign, “Turindane, Tugereyo Amahoro” (Protect Each Other, Arrive Safely), aimed at encouraging road users to adopt safe driving behaviors and prevent accidents.
The campaign was launched in Rubavu District on Friday, November 7, 2025, in Nyakiriba, an area prone to road accidents. The launch was attended by Inspector General of Police Felix Namuhoranye, State Minister in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Amb. Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye and other officials.
Amb. Uwihanganye emphasized that roads should not be places where people lose their lives. “We do not want roads to become death traps. Roads should support economic activities and facilitate safe mobility for all,” he said, urging drivers to take care when operating their vehicles.
IGP Namuhoranye added that the Rubavu campaign would expand nationwide. “We want road users to remember to protect each other. Drive responsibly, respect other users, and ensure safety, because many accidents are caused by our own behaviors, not just road conditions,” he noted.
Western Province Governor Jean Bosco Ntibitura confirmed the human toll, saying, “In the past three months, road accidents have killed 26 people and injured 331 others in our province. Road users should exercise caution and prioritize safety over speed.”
Pacifique Abayisenga, a motorcycle taxi driver with 13 years of experience, welcomed the initiative, stating that the campaign reminds road users to exercise care and courtesy, which can significantly reduce accidents.
Data from the three months indicate that Nyamasheke District reported no fatalities, Karongi one death, and Nyabihu the highest with seven deaths.
