President Paul Kagame on Monday officially inaugurated Zaria Court Kigali, a $25 million sports and entertainment complex. This facility represents Rwanda’s commitment to youth development, innovation, and cultural initiatives.
Nestled in Remera, Kigali, Zaria Court is a new development that aims to support Africa’s future through its people, culture, and the potential of its youth. This state-of-the-art facility is the brainchild of Masai Ujiri, President of the Toronto Raptors and founder of Giants of Africa, a foundation dedicated to nurturing young African talent through sports.

President Kagame, flanked by Masai Ujiri, Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire, Zaria Group CEO Andrew Feinstein, and Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, cut the ceremonial ribbon, officially opening the complex. The facility is designed to integrate sport, business, and community activities.

In an insightful exchange with Ujiri, President Kagame discussed his personal journey and how it influenced his leadership approach. “Growing up, I went through many hardships,” he said. “I never became an athlete, nor do I claim to be a great businessman.

But one thing I’ve learned is the importance of helping others achieve their goals.” President Kagame also expressed his desire to support new initiatives that facilitate growth. “Even if I’m not directly involved, if I can provide the environment or support to help others succeed, then I consider that a win,” he stated.
For President Kagame, sports are seen as a catalyst for economic growth and national unity. “Sports create jobs, build families, and contribute to national growth,” he added. “Look at the stadiums, arenas being built; they provide livelihoods to many.” His words reflected Rwanda’s developing reputation as a regional hub for sports tourism and international events.
Zaria Court stands as an example of this vision. The complex includes an 80-room hotel, rooftop dining spaces, various restaurants, a modern gym, a media studio, collaborative co-working spaces, and a local market. All these amenities are positioned around a multipurpose court designed to host a wide array of events, including basketball games, concerts, festivals, and community activities.
Construction of the complex began in August 2023. For Ujiri, this project extends beyond basketball; it is about creating opportunities and giving young Africans a chance to pursue their aspirations.
“President Kagame has seen sports as a business and economic driver that can develop a country and our continent. We need that chance,” Ujiri said during the launch. “When you talk about vision, leadership, engaging people, partnerships, everything you can think of in bringing people together, that is what President Kagame stands for.”
Ujiri further praised President Kagame for being among the African leaders who recognize sports as an industry, not just a recreational activity. “We tend to see sports as a pastime. President Kagame sees it as business, as an engine for economic growth. That perspective is transformative,” Ujiri emphasized.
The inauguration of Zaria Court was also a highlight of the ongoing Giants of Africa Festival, a week-long celebration that continues through August 2. This festival brings together young athletes, coaches, creatives, and leaders from across the continent, creating a dynamic space for learning, sharing, and fostering belief in Africa’s next generation.
President Kagame’s concluding message underscored his expansive view of African youth, transcending national boundaries. “When thinking about Africa’s youth, I don’t think about borders,” he affirmed. “Our young people are the continent’s biggest asset. We must invest in them.” This statement encapsulated the collaborative spirit and forward-looking vision behind Zaria Court Kigali.
