Kirehe District, now recognized as a satellite city of Kigali, has inaugurated a modern multi-purpose gymnasium and youth center at 2.7 billion Rwandan Francs. The facilities are located in Nyakarambi Sector, Kirehe Town.
The new gymnasium is equipped to host indoor sports such as volleyball, basketball, and tennis. It can also accommodate concerts, weddings, conferences, and other events, with seating capacity for up to 1,000 people and full coverage for all indoor activities.
Speaking exclusively to Umunota, Kirehe District Deputy Mayor in charge of Economic and Development Affairs, Modeste Nzirabatinya, emphasized that the gymnasium will nurture local talent and provide a platform for youth activities.
“It will host various sporting events, including volleyball and basketball, as well as conferences, music concerts, weddings, and other celebrations. This allows the youth of Kirehe to maximize their potential while enjoying the facilities,” said Nzirabatinya.
He added, “This building will transform lives by supporting youth talent. Kirehe is known for producing many volleyball players, but previously lacked facilities of this standard. Now, talents will be monitored and developed, not only in volleyball and basketball but also in other disciplines.”
Nzirabatinya also highlighted that the youth with artistic and cultural talents will benefit, as the center will provide a venue to showcase their work. “Young artists and event organizers can use this space, which will generate income and promote creativity. We are fast-tracking Kirehe’s vision of becoming a city that complements Kigali,” he said.
The Deputy Mayor announced that the gymnasium will be officially inaugurated later this month, in November. Additionally, outdoor basketball and volleyball courts have been constructed to support recreational activities, alongside the youth center, which will serve as a hub for nurturing and showcasing local talent.
