King Faisal Hospital (KFH) announced that it will start providing dental implant services, marking a major advancement in oral healthcare in Rwanda.
Dr. Madeleine Uwamahoro, a dental specialist at KFH, explained that dental implants differ from traditional dentures, as they replace the tooth starting from the root, providing a permanent solution. The procedure involves placing an implant into the jawbone, allowing it to integrate over three months, after which a crown is attached.
She emphasized that following proper oral hygiene and avoiding tobacco can make implants last a lifetime. The service will be available for patients missing one or multiple teeth, including those who never developed teeth.
Dr. Uwamahoro highlighted the importance of teeth in protecting surrounding oral tissues, supporting proper chewing, and preventing digestive problems. She warned against leaving gaps where teeth were lost, as it can lead to further oral health issues.
This development reflects Rwanda’s progress in dental care, though awareness remains low, with many seeking treatment only after serious problems arise.
