The Kigali wetlands restoration project has reached an exciting stage as efforts continue to protect and rehabilitate key ecosystems across the city.
Nyandungu Eco Park, which has become a popular spot for recreation—especially for cyclists—stands as a shining example of how restored wetlands can benefit both people and the environment. Building on this success, the City of Kigali and the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) are continuing restoration works in other major wetlands to protect biodiversity and improve urban resilience.
Wetlands play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. They help restore species that have disappeared, purify water, reduce flooding, prevent soil erosion, and fight the effects of climate change. Beyond environmental benefits, restored wetlands also beautify the city, promote eco-tourism, and support sustainable farming, which contributes to the country’s long-term development.
Eng. Martine Uwera, the officer in charge of the Environmental and Biodiversity Protection Monitoring Program at REMA, said that while progress is being made, some sites are facing delays. She explained that in Nyabugogo Swamp, the work has been delayed because a lake is being built there, which requires special equipment and effort. In Rwampara Swamp, the delay is because its development began later, in November 2024, while other sites started earlier in March 2024.
Gikondo Swamp has been designed to feature a large five-hectare pond that collects water from Rwampara and Gikondo. It serves as a symbol of Rwanda’s progress in environmental conservation. Kibumba Swamp, on the other hand, will focus on fishing activities and will include ponds, a flower garden, and a facility showcasing Rwanda’s fishing heritage. Nyabugogo Swamp will be dedicated to research and education about biodiversity protection.
As Nyandungu Eco Park continues to attract more visitors and promote green recreation, authorities emphasize that their goal is to ensure all wetlands bring similar environmental and economic benefits. Rwanda remains committed to protecting its environment through national projects and international agreements aimed at promoting sustainability, clean air, and a better quality of life for all citizens.
