Gakenke youth urged to take active role in environmental protection

Youth in Gakenke District, Northern Province, have been called upon to actively engage in environmental conservation and community development activities.

Marie Thérèse Uwamahoro, Deputy Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, appealed the closing of the Monthly Community Service (Umuganda) on October 30, 2025. She highlighted that youth participation is crucial for national cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and overall development.

The Umuganda activities took place across all 19 sectors of Gakenke District and included tree planting alongside millet cultivation. At the district level, the event was held in Gakenke Sector, bringing together volunteers from various communities.

Patricie Uwitonze, coordinator of youth volunteers in the district, commended her peers for their dedication and encouraged continued active involvement in community initiatives.

During the event, SP Canisius Kayumba, District Police Commander, emphasized the importance of security in protecting the future of the community. He also urged young people to set positive examples by combating drug abuse, alcoholism, and domestic conflicts.

The volunteer month, which ran from October 1 to October 30, 2025, was celebrated under the theme: “Engaging Citizens with Purpose.”
