As part of improving health services, in February 2023, Rwanda launched a project to expand the capacity and size of Masaka Hospital in Kicukiro District, where the Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK) is planned to be relocated.
The hospital is being constructed by the Chinese company Shanghai Construction Group Co., Ltd, and is expected to cost 85 billion Rwandan francs, equivalent to 580 million Chinese Yuan.
Once completed, the hospital will have the capacity to accommodate 827 patients, meaning 827 beds — more than double the current CHUK, which can accommodate around 400 patients.
After two years of construction, the Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA) announced via its X (formerly Twitter) account that the construction and expansion works of Masaka Hospital are now 96% complete.
This means that only 4% of the work remains before completion.
Photos shared on their X page show some of the modern medical equipment already installed and ready for use.
The hospital is being built in a modern design, with rooms containing nine beds, four beds, two beds, and single-bed private rooms, all spacious and well-furnished.
Unlike other hospitals, each room has its own private toilet and shower, which is not common in most
