ACP Rutikanga urges youth to avoid drugs

The Spokesperson of the Rwanda National Police, ACP Boniface Rutikanga, has called on the youth, particularly musicians, to avoid using drugs. He also warned those who consume drugs abroad that they will still be tested and held accountable upon returning to Rwanda.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Umunota, ACP Rutikanga referenced recent cases involving Rwandan artists Babu and Ariel Wayz, who were investigated for drug use and subsequently sent to a rehabilitation center.

“Drug use can destroy in a single moment what you’ve built over ten years. Building your life, your reputation, and your fanbase requires integrity and discipline. But when you get intoxicated, your fame collapses, and recovering from that will be extremely difficult,” ACP Rutikanga said.

He emphasized that even those using drugs abroad will be monitored upon re-entry into Rwanda. “Just because someone is abroad doesn’t mean they escape the law. Engaging in prohibited activities with full knowledge of the penalties is unacceptable,” he warned.

ACP Rutikanga urged parents to support law enforcement and healthcare professionals in the fight against drug abuse. He reminded the youth of the opportunities provided by their country and encouraged them to use these opportunities to improve themselves and benefit others.

“Drugs are not your friends. Using them will destroy your health, waste your potential, and shorten your life,” he said.

Addressing the youth directly, he added, “Life is beautiful when you are healthy, clear-minded, and strong. Drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and other substances are not your friends—they will destroy you.”

ACP Rutikanga’s message reinforces the Rwandan government’s ongoing commitment to drug prevention and rehabilitation, highlighting the risks associated with substance abuse both at home and abroad.
