In Washington, Prime Minister Dr. Nsengiyumva met with U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright to strengthen cooperation in energy innovation — including SMR nuclear power, natural gas and critical mineral processing.
A key focus of the discussions was Rwanda’s ambition to develop a nuclear power plant using Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology — a central component of the country’s long-term plan to increase access to reliable and clean electricity. The talks highlighted the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting energy access and sustainable infrastructure across Africa.
Officials also explored opportunities for cooperation in the natural gas sector and in the processing of critical minerals, areas that are increasingly important for global clean energy supply chains. Strengthening collaboration in these strategic industries is expected to support Rwanda’s economic transformation by accelerating industrial growth and energy security.
The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to deepen their partnership on energy innovation, particularly in fields aligned with Rwanda’s clean energy vision. U.S. representatives reaffirmed their support for African nations in shaping their own energy futures through access to advanced technologies, investment, and technical expertise.
