In the early hours of Wednesday, a devastating collision involving two buses and other vehicles
occurred near Kiryandongo on the busy Kampala–Gulu Highway — a major route from Kampala
northwards.
Police initially reported 63 fatalities, but later revised the number to at least 46 after finding
Some unconscious victims were still alive.
Preliminary findings indicate the crash occurred when both buses, traveling in opposite directions
directions, were attempting to overtake maneuvers and collided head-on, triggering a chain reaction crash involving four vehicles.
Authorities said this incident highlights chronic road safety challenges in Uganda’s poor
infrastructure, narrow roads, and risky overtaking practices remain major factors contributing to the high toll of traffic fatalities.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals
while identification of the dead is underway. The police have appealed to all motorists to
exercise extreme caution, especially when overtaking.
