Mount Kigali University students are increasingly advocating for the establishment of a basketball team, viewing it as a key avenue for recreation and enhanced campus life. Basketball, a globally popular sport, holds significant appeal in Rwanda, with many secondary schools and universities already boasting active teams that provide enjoyment for both players and spectators.
Mount Kigali students have frequently voiced this desire in vox pops and various conversations, often citing neighboring institutions like IPRC Kicukiro as examples of universities with thriving basketball programs.
Students who shared their opinions expressed a strong desire for a university team. Sarah Uwase, a student from the Bachelor of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management, stated, “I think it would be better if the campus has a basketball team that competes with other schools.”
This sentiment was echoed by David Mugisha, a Bachelor of Business Management student, who excitedly remarked, “Ooh! You know our country is hosting BAL [Basketball Africa League], and it’s a wonderful game. Can you imagine if one of our colleagues is on court and we are there watching him? This will be a big pleasure to our university!”

Students believe that introducing a basketball team would foster stronger relationships through sports and contribute to their physical fitness. They also envision inviting other universities for friendly matches, promoting a good atmosphere and inter-school camaraderie.
Wilton Niyobugingo, the Sports Minister in Mount Kigali University’s Students Association, affirmed the students’ enthusiasm. “We are very aware of the students’ passion for basketball. A team would not only boost morale but also provide a healthy outlet for their energy and talent.”
Manyange Emmanuel, the University’s Sports Coordinator, confirmed that the administration is actively addressing these suggestions. “The management recognizes the importance of sports facilities for student well-being and holistic development,” Emmanuel stated.
“While current infrastructure projects are underway, plans for new playgrounds and gyms are definitely on the agenda. It’s a priority for us to provide the best possible environment for our students.”
