Mount Kigali University (MKUR) is undergoing a transformative phase, with major developments across departments and infrastructure. These changes, driven by the university’s newfound autonomy, mark a significant leap forward as MKUR continues its ambitious overhaul in various areas.
The academic department has seen remarkable upgrades, introducing diverse new courses such as law, information science, event management, hospitality and tourism, film production, and animation studies. These programs aim to equip students with skills relevant to evolving industries, ensuring they are well-prepared for the global job market.
The improvements extend beyond academics, with substantial upgrades to the campus infrastructure. These changes are visible as soon as you enter the university.
A new traffic barrier has been installed to regulate and enhance vehicle movement within the campus, ensuring safety and order for both pedestrians and drivers.
The installation of new benches across the campus addresses the needs of a growing student population, especially during peak times such as lunch breaks when seating is limited. These benches provide more than just a place to sit; they serve as hubs for social interaction, encouraging informal discussions, and cultural exchanges, and fostering connections between local and international students.
“Benches serve as gathering spots for students from different departments, enhancing friendship and social interaction through group discussions, study sessions, and informal mingling,” shared Kalisa Taolfik, a first-year Mass Media and Communication student.
Additionally, these benches promote mental well-being by offering a space for relaxation amidst nature, helping students de-stress during their academic routines.
MKUR has also introduced waterproof sunshades across the campus to enhance functionality and comfort. These installations protect students and staff from the elements and provide organized outdoor spaces for various activities. Beyond their practicality, the sunshades add a modern and aesthetic touch to the campus landscape.
Umugwane Divine, a sixth-semester Mass Media and Communication student, noted, “The waterproof installations help students by reducing pressure during exam clearance periods while also giving the campus a contemporary and organized look.”
The university is also constructing a new Future Block for Learning, which will be home to state-of-the-art classrooms, advanced laboratories, and collaborative spaces. This modern facility will enhance the learning environment
While my team and I were inspecting near the gate, we noticed some students sitting on the grass. This inspired us to take action to improve their comfort. We decided to install benches in specific locations, such as under trees, to provide shade and protection from the sun.
“Our next plan is to further improve these spaces by adding waterproof sunshades. These will be installed in key areas, including: Near the gate, Up to the information office, around the generator area, and near the canteen. This effort is aimed at ensuring students are also protected during the rainy season.” Said Nshimiyimana Evase, Security Estate Manager.
