Rwanda Premier League launches new awards to boost competition and fan engagement

The Rwanda Premier League has introduced a groundbreaking set of awards aimed at rewarding excellence and boosting excitement throughout the season for players, coaches, and even fans.

In a historic move, the league will now offer a brand-new car worth Rwf 15 million to the Player of the Season, the first time such a prize has ever been awarded in Rwandan football.

This initiative is part of a broader scheme that will see outstanding performances recognized on a match-by-match, weekly, monthly, and seasonal basis.

Weekly and Monthly Awards Breakdown:

  • Player of the Match: Rwf 100,000
  • Player of the Week: Rwf 200,000
  • Player of the Month: Rwf 400,000
  • Coach of the Month: Rwf 300,000
  • Goalkeeper of the Month: Rwf 200,000

According to Rwanda Premier League chairman Yussuf Mudaheranwa, the awards represent a new chapter for local football:

“This is going to raise competition in the league because every player will want to stand out. It will also keep them working hard until the very last game, as everyone will be chasing these prizes. For the first time in Rwanda, we are offering a car as a prize for the player of the season, which is a historic milestone,” he said.

Fan involvement

The initiative isn’t limited to players and coaches. Fans will also have a chance to win prizes through match-day promotions and online voting.

Each match will reward the Best Fan with Rwf 25,000, while fans will have the opportunity to vote for the Player of the Week from a shortlist of eight nominees.

Jean Paul Habumugisha, one of the partners behind the initiative, emphasized the importance of engaging the football community as a whole:

“These prizes will motivate players to perform better and nurture their talent, while also rewarding fans who passionately support the league. It is about creating a stronger football culture in Rwanda,” he noted.
