Renovated Amahoro stadium to host first ever rugby tournament

For the first time since its extensive renovation, the iconic Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali will open its doors to a major rugby tournament, hosting the 11th edition of the “Genocide Memorial International Rugby 7s Tournament” this Saturday, June 21, 2025.

This significant event, organized by the Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF) in partnership with the Rwanda Olympic Committee, underscores the nation’s commitment to using sport as a vehicle for remembrance, healing, and unity.

The Amahoro National Stadium, meaning “Peace Stadium” in Kinyarwanda, recently underwent a massive upgrade, increasing its capacity from 25,000 to an impressive 45,508 spectators. The multi-purpose arena now boasts state-of-the-art facilities, making it a fitting venue for both national and international sporting events. Its reopening on July 1, 2024, marked a new era for sports in Rwanda, and its selection for this tournament highlights its readiness to host high-profile competitions.

The multi-purpose Stadium can host 45 thousands people with seats.

This year’s tournament sees a significant increase in participation, with 21 teams from across the region set to compete. This is a notable rise from last year’s 16 teams, demonstrating the growing interest and engagement in Rwandan rugby. Fourteen male teams and seven female teams will battle it out for the coveted trophies.
