The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has awarded a grant of 330 million Rwandan francs to two young Rwandan filmmakers, Samuel Ishimwe Karemangingo and Robert “Pepe” Imanishimwe, marking a historic first for domestic support of local cinema.
Until now, Rwandan filmmakers largely depended on foreign sponsors or personal funding to bring their projects to life. This new grant signifies a major step toward nurturing homegrown talent and fostering a sustainable local film industry.
Samuel Ishimwe Karemangingo, internationally recognized for his short film Imfura, which won the Silver Bear Award at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival, is the first to benefit from the funding. He is currently developing his debut feature film, Ikimanuka (The Season of the Weary). The story follows Mbanda, a 57-year-old man leading a solitary life until an unexpected reunion with the love of his youth brings new meaning and challenges.
Robert “Pepe” Imanishimwe, another rising star in Rwandan cinema, has also received funding for his upcoming project. Known for producing films that have competed at international festivals, Pepe has consistently explored social and cultural themes that reflect Rwandan identity and heritage. His new project, which remains under wraps, is highly anticipated in local and international film circuits, signaling Rwanda’s growing presence in the global cinematic landscape.
