Over 300 returnees from DRC begin unity and reconciliation sessions

More than 300 Rwandans who had been living temporarily in Nyarushishi camp in Rusizi District, having recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have begun participating in discussions on national unity and reconciliation.

The sessions, organized jointly by the Ministry of Emergency Management (MINEMA) and the Ministry of Local Government (MINUBUMWE), aim to educate the returnees about Rwandan unity throughout history, the origins of divisive ideologies, and the impact of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

Discussions also covered Rwandan unity before colonization, how it was disrupted, the erosion of cultural values, and the post-genocide journey toward rebuilding unity.

Rwanda continues to receive returning Rwandan families from the DRC. Since January 2025, 5,167 individuals have returned, many reporting that they were previously told in the DRC that they would face mistreatment if they returned to Rwanda.

On November 6, 2025, at the La Corniche border, 69 returning families totaling 223 people, 12 men, 58 women, and 153 children were received.

Upon arrival in Rwanda, returnees are first temporarily housed at the Nyarushishi Center in Rusizi District. They receive initial support, including 270,000 Rwandan francs for adults over 18, 182,000 Rwandan francs for those under 18, and basic food supplies valued at 45,000 Rwandan francs per person.
