Over 220,000 candidates set for 2024/25 primary leaving examinations

A total of 220,840 learners are expected to sit for the 2024/25 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE). Of these, 120,635 are girls and 100,205 are boys. Additionally, 645 of the candidates are learners with disabilities.
The examinations will commence on June 20 and conclude on July 3 across various centers. According to the Rwanda Basic Education Board ( REB), this year’s enrollment marks a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to equitable access to education. This is highlighted by a notable increase of 17,841 students compared to the 202,999 who sat for the 2023/2024 Primary Leaving Examinations.

To mark the launch of the examination period, ceremonies will be held simultaneously at six selected primary schools across the country. The Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengiyumva, will be at GS Institute Filipo Simaldone. At EP Saint Ignace, the ceremony will be led by the Minister of State for Education, Claudette Irere.

In the Eastern Province, Dr. Nelson Mbarushimana, Director General of the Rwanda Education Board (REB), will oversee the commencement of exams at GS Rwamagana.
Elsewhere, the Deputy Director General of REB, Paul Umukunzi, will inaugurate the exams in the Southern Province at GS Rose Mystica, while another official will lead the proceedings in the Northern Province at GS Rusiga.

Learners with disabilities will receive tailored support, as has been the practice in previous years. This support includes Braille-ready exam materials, large-print papers, specialized recorders, exam scribes, and extra time allowances, ensuring fair accommodation for all special needs candidates during the PLE.
