The National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) has revealed that only 5% of Rwanda’s coffee is consumed domestically, while the vast majority is exported. In a statement on November 7, 2025, NAEB emphasized that the government has put strategies in place to increase local consumption and create jobs for youth along the coffee value chain.
NAEB Director General, Bizimana Claude, noted that efforts include supporting farmers with free fertilizers, pest control, and training, while also promoting local coffee sales. The goal is to increase domestic consumption from 5% to 15%.
Rwanda currently has 26 million coffee trees, with plans to rejuvenate over 10 million trees within the next six years. The country’s coffee production and exports continue to rise: in the 2024/25 fiscal year, 21,295 tons were harvested (up 25% from 16,979 tons), and 20,509 tons were exported (up 24% from 16,479 tons), generating $116.18 million in foreign revenue — a 48% increase from the previous year.
