Ncuti Gatwa to star Alongside ‘Wicked’ actress Cynthia Erivo in new animated film

Rwandan-born British actor Ncuti Gatwa has been cast in Bad Fairies, a new animated feature currently in production by Warner Bros. Animation and Locksmith Animation.

Gatwa will voice one of the film’s characters, although details about his role have not yet been disclosed. He joins actress Cynthia Erivo, widely known for her performance in Wicked, who will voice a character named Jayne Staplegun.

Bad Fairies is the first film produced under the partnership between Warner Bros. and Locksmith Animation. The movie is being developed in London and is expected to be released on May 21, 2027.

The film is written by Deborah Frances-White and directed by Megan Nicole Dong, with Olivier Staphylas as co-director. Its music is being created by Tony Award-winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, known for Six: The Musical. Isabella “Machine” Summers of Florence + The Machine is overseeing score production, while Ian Eisendrath serves as Executive Music Producer.

Gatwa was born in Kigali’s Nyarugenge District on October 15, 1992. His family moved to Scotland during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, where he later began his acting career.

He gained global recognition in 2019 for his role in the Netflix series Sex Education. His growing filmography includes major titles such as Barbie, Masters of the Air, Doctor Who on BBC, and The Roses, among others.

His involvement in Bad Fairies adds another major achievement to his international career and highlights the growing presence of Rwandan talent in the global film industry.
