The administration of Muhanga District has announced that in the past five years, 31 multi-story buildings have been constructed in Muhanga City, with plans to build more than 10 additional structures in the 2025/2026 fiscal year.
Muhanga City is one of six satellite cities supporting Kigali and is considered centrally located, accessible from Kigali, Huye, or Karongi. The city serves as a commercial hub for several districts, particularly in the Southern and Western regions, where buyers often prefer to purchase goods directly in Muhanga.
Bizimana Eric, the Deputy Mayor in charge of Economic Development, told IGIHE that in 2021, after the city’s master plan for land use was approved, the district began engaging private developers to implement the plan. The construction initiative has been carried out in phases, starting with more than 10 multi-story buildings.
He said, “It has not been an easy journey, but developers agreed to start these development changes. The initiative began with the modern Muhanga market building and a few others constructed during that period. In the first phase of the five years, we completed nine buildings, followed by another nine, and currently 13 more are nearing completion, bringing the total to 31.”
Deputy Mayor Bizimana added that an additional 10 buildings are expected to be constructed, which will bring the total number of multi-story buildings in Muhanga to over 40.
He also highlighted that the initiative is part of broader urban development, including the construction of over 20 kilometers of paved roads, increased access to clean water, and the development of new markets such as Nyabisindu, all of which contribute to enhancing the city’s infrastructure.
It is projected that by 2050, 70% of Muhanga District’s population will reside in urban areas.
