Students at Mount Kigali University are gaining more than academic knowledge; they are learning essential life-saving skills in fire safety and first aid. These practical lessons equip students with the tools to respond effectively to emergencies, a training often missing from traditional school curricula.
In partnership with the Rwanda National Police, the university organized sessions that taught students how to handle sudden fires using everyday items like sand and blankets, as well as professional equipment such as fire extinguishers. The program aimed to provide hands-on experience in preventing and responding to disasters.
Jean de Dieu Nsanzimfura, Head of the Security and Safety Unit at Mount Kigali University, added:
“Our goal is to ensure that students are not only academically prepared but also equipped to handle emergencies. Fire safety is a critical skill, and these sessions give students the confidence to act quickly and responsibly if a disaster occurs.”
Uwingeneye Immacule, a student in the Department of Mass Media and Journalism, shared:
“This training is invaluable. We learned how to act quickly during fires, including how to use fire extinguishers. These skills are not something we usually learn in school, and they could save lives.”
The Rwanda National Police Emergency Department highlighted that this training is part of a nationwide initiative to educate Rwandans on responding to disasters, including fires, which remain a significant risk in many communities. Authorities encouraged all citizens to take part, emphasizing that the program empowers participants to protect themselves and others.
