A group of determined female students at Mount Kigali University (MKU) is taking the lead in advocating for more sports opportunities for women on campus. During a recent meeting with Sports Minister Wilton Niyobugingo, the students presented their case for a dedicated Sports Day and other activities aimed at fostering participation, teamwork, and community engagement.
The students shared their need to engage more in extracurricular activities, explaining that monotonous class attendance without recreational breaks often leaves them feeling uninspired and disconnected.

Theresa Afuro, a Medical Laboratory Science student, emphasized the benefits of creating a girls’ volleyball team. “Volleyball promotes physical fitness, reduces stress, and helps students maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal well-being,” she explained.

Emmanuella Keji, a Biomedical Laboratory Science student, added to the conversation by advocating for trail running as another beneficial activity. “We would appreciate it if we had facilities like trail running, which strengthens muscles, improves heart health, and enhances focus. It is also a great way to relieve stress and connect with nature,” she noted.
The group stressed that sports and other extracurricular activities are vital to student life. These opportunities help develop skills, foster friendships, and create a more vibrant campus community. “Many students feel isolated and unmotivated because of the limited activities available. We believe Sports Day could be the first step toward a more engaging campus experience.” the students collectively stated.
They proposed a variety of initiatives, including sports competitions, cultural events, and community service programs, all aimed at enriching student life and creating a sense of unity among students.

Sports Minister Wilton Niyobugingo, expressed his support for the students’ ideas. “Your voices matter. A Sports Day dedicated to girls will provide a platform for them to participate, showcase their talents, and have fun in an inclusive environment. I am committed to working with you to ensure this vision becomes a reality.” he said.
The students’ campaign has started important conversations across the campus, inspiring others to support their cause. Their effort is not just about sports but about creating a more inclusive and balanced university experience.
The university has recently taken steps to improve student life by investing in infrastructure. A new building under construction will include recreational spaces to enhance campus life and provide students with areas for relaxation and interaction.
However, the need for inclusive sporting activities remains an issue. The students’ advocacy highlights the importance of adding diverse sports programs to further improve student well-being and foster a stronger campus community.
