Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim criticised his team’s lack of fight after a 1–0 defeat to 10-man Everton at Old Trafford on Monday, a result that deepened the club’s growing concerns about performance and league position.
United were backed by a home crowd of 74,140, but the atmosphere quickly shifted when Everton went down to 10 men in the 13th minute. Midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye was sent off after slapping teammate Michael Keane during a heated exchange, a moment that seemed to hand United a major advantage.
Instead, Everton responded first. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored 16 minutes after the red card, and United failed to recover, despite dominating possession for much of the match. The final whistle was met with frustration across the stadium.
“We are not there, not even close to where we should be to fight for the best positions in the league,” Amorim said afterward. “I’m afraid of returning to the feeling of last season. That is my biggest concern.”
In a pointed message about his team’s mentality, Amorim added:
“I hope my players, when they lose the ball, fight for each other, not fight each other.” The remark was a reference to Everton’s internal clash, but also a critique of United’s lack of collective intensity.
The defeat leaves Manchester United 10th in the Premier League, raising further questions about the squad’s form and direction under Amorim. United next travel to Crystal Palace on November 30.
