Families living near Urugezi Wetlands in Burera District, Northern Province, have received modern energy-efficient stoves (Rondereza) to help preserve the wetland’s rich biodiversity.
The initiative was organized by the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA) in partnership with local authorities. The first distribution took place in Kabuga Village, Mubuga Cell, Miyove Sector, Gicumbi District, benefiting 192 households. RWCA emphasized that the program aims to reduce residents’ reliance on cutting and burning wood from the surrounding forests.
Beyond protecting biodiversity, the stoves promote environmentally friendly energy use and safeguard human health. Residents who received the stoves told THE UPDATE that the initiative saves them long trips to collect firewood and prevents the destruction of local forests.
Moses Kirenga, District Executive Secretary of Gicumbi, urged residents to take care of the stoves, avoid selling them, and ensure no illegal activities occur within Urugezi Wetlands.
Urugezi Wetlands is a unique ecosystem and habitat for wildlife, including grey crowned cranes, ibis, and other bird species. RWCA hopes the wetlands will continue to be preserved and attract tourists. The wetland spans approximately 6,000 to 8,000 hectares.
