From YouTube tutorials to 226 music videos: The inspiring journey of Rwanda’s self-taught filmmaker, Sani B

When passion meets purpose, greatness often follows, and Sani B’s story is a perfect example. Without ever stepping into a formal film school, this young Rwandan filmmaker turned curiosity into a thriving career that is shaping the country’s creative industry.

“I never studied video editing in school,” Sani B shared in an exclusive interview. “Everything I know came from YouTube tutorials. Later, I had the privilege of working with Director Easy Cut, one of Rwanda’s top video directors, who helped refine my craft. I’m truly grateful for his mentorship.”

From humble beginnings to running his own studio, SNB Filmz Production Sani B has built an impressive body of work. In just four years, he has produced and directed more than 226 music videos for some of East Africa’s biggest stars. His name appears behind hits like Uwadanje by Prince Kizzi, Iyo Foto by Bruce Melodie and Bien Aime, Big Time by Yvan Buravan, Tugendane by Bushali, and Phenomena by Kennysol.

His creative touch also shines in videos such as True Love by The Ben, Jeje by Paltini featuring Davis D, Lickle Wine by Pallaso featuring Ketchup, Nyash by Kataleya and Kandle featuring Afrique, Ewegawe Adam featuring Sat B, and Haryana Te Belong by Kevin Rana featuring Kaash the Rapper. Each video showcases his talent for storytelling, camera work, and innovative editing.

But Sani B’s journey isn’t just about personal success — it’s about giving back. He dreams of creating a post-production house that mentors and equips young filmmakers to compete on an international level.

“Editing is the heart of a great video,” he says with conviction. “If we can strengthen collaboration between artists and video creators, we can elevate Rwandan media to global standards.”
