In a quiet part of Rwanda, a young boy once picked up a tennis racket for the very first time. He didn’t know then that this simple act would one day take him across borders and shape his entire life.
That boy is Karenzi Hirwa Brian, a talented tennis player from IPRC Kigali. Today, he stands as a clear example of how sports can transform lives, bring hope, and open new doors for young people.
A journey that started with passion
Brian’s tennis journey began when he was a child. While many kids played soccer on dusty fields, Brian found joy in swinging a racket. For him, tennis was more than just a game; it became a safe place, a way to express himself, and a space where he could dream big.
Even when life was difficult, tennis gave him something positive to focus on. “Tennis kept me focused, disciplined, and away from bad habits,” he says. “It became part of me.”
Tennis opened the world to him
Thanks to his talent and hard work, Brian has traveled to countries like Kenya and Uganda to compete in international tournaments. “Every country I visit teaches me something new,” he shares. “It’s not just about winning matches; it’s about growing as a person.”
And this is just the beginning for Brian. He continues to chase bigger dreams, with more opportunities to travel the world and represent Rwanda on the international stage.
Tennis shaped his character
At home and in his community, Brian is known not only for his tennis skills but also for his humility, discipline, and generosity. Tennis taught him to respect others, to work hard for his dreams, and to help others along the way.
He now spends time helping younger players learn the game and encourages them to stay focused. “I know where I came from,” he says, “and I want to be someone others can look up to.”
His Guiding Words
Brian always keeps a powerful quote close to his heart: “I’m no longer a slave of fear, I’m a child of God. We define winning differently, you and I.” These words remind him to stay strong in his beliefs and not let fear stop him from becoming his best self, both on and off the court.
The future looks bright

Recently, Brian shared exciting news: he has officially committed to Ferrum College in Virginia, USA. There, he will continue his tennis journey while pursuing his studies. This is a dream come true for Brian and a proud moment for Rwanda.
A message for young people
Brian’s story teaches us that no dream is too big if you believe in yourself, work hard, and stay focused. Whether you come from a small village or a busy city, your talent can take you far. His message to young people is clear and simple: “Never give up. If I made it, you can too.”
