When war brought life to a standstill in Sudan, Zhra Elola knew she had to leave.
With her dreams of becoming a medical laboratory scientist hanging by a thread, she turned to social media and discovered Mount Kigali University on TikTok.

“I was studying in Sudan, but when the war came, everything stopped—education, healthcare, everything. I came across Mount Kigali University on TikTok and saw that they offered Medical Laboratory Sciences,” Elola told MKU Magazine.
For many students like Elola, finding familiarity in a new country is not easy. The anguish of fleeing from war and conflict can be overwhelming, and adapting to life in a foreign land presents its own set of challenges. Yet, Rwanda has emerged as a beacon of safety and opportunity for students from countries facing political instability.
Mount Kigali University, nestled in the heart of Kigali, has become a hub for students from across Africa. While the majority of its students are Rwandan nationals, the university is home to a growing number of international students from countries like Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, Nigeria, Chad, and beyond.
Rwanda has earned a reputation as one of the safest countries in Africa, known for its low crime rate, cleanliness, and strong sense of order. Today, as Elola walks through Rwanda’s clean, safe streets, she calls the country “African Dubai” and hopes her homeland will one day follow suit.
Kigali, the capital, is celebrated for its beauty and meticulous urban planning. This environment is particularly attractive for international students seeking stability and quality education.
Mount Kigali University stands out with its mission to provide cutting-edge education in fields such as Health Sciences, Business, Hospitality and Tourism, Media and Communication, and Technology. The university offers students the chance to complete their studies efficiently, with programs designed to be both affordable and time-sensitive.
“I also learned that Mount Kigali University’s study system allows students to complete their programs quickly,” Elola said, adding, “Rwanda is a beautiful country, and the people are so kind. I want my country to look like Rwanda one day.”
For many students, studying in Rwanda is about more than academics—it’s about finding hope and building a future.
Emmanuella Keji Emmanuel, a student from South Sudan, shared how studying in Rwanda has inspired her:

“My parents encouraged me to come to Rwanda for my education. It’s affordable, and you finish your studies early. I wish South Sudan could have unity and peace like Rwanda. I dream of a South Sudan without war.”
For Hazim Khalid Saif Eldin, a Medical Laboratory Sciences student from Sudan, his hope is for a future in his homeland.

“I hope the war in Sudan will end soon. My dream is to open my own laboratory and hospital.”
These students carry not only the weight of their past but also the hope for a brighter future. Despite the challenges of adjusting to life in a new country, they are determined to make the most of the opportunities Rwanda offers.
Rwanda’s success in maintaining peace and stability has made it a model for many. With its focus on safety, cleanliness, and affordability, the country is drawing students from across Africa who are eager to rebuild their lives.
For institutions like Mount Kigali University, this is a chance to make a difference. By providing a welcoming environment and quality education, the university is not just shaping careers—it’s helping students rewrite their stories.
As Elola puts it, “Rwanda is like African Dubai.” For these students, it’s not just a place to study—it’s a place to dream, grow, and hope for a better future.
As Rwanda continues to position itself as a leader in education and a haven for students from unstable regions, Mount Kigali University remains at the forefront, offering not just education but a lifeline to those in need.
In the words of Keji Emmanuel, “I wish for my country to have peace like Rwanda. Until then, I’m grateful to be here, pursuing my dreams.”
