Drama in the Rwanda Premier League as giants stumble on matchday eight

Matchday eight of the Rwanda Premier League delivered one of the most dramatic weekends of the season, with traditional heavyweights APR FC and Rayon Sports both suffering unexpected defeats while Ben Moussa’s in-form Police FC continued their impressive run at the top of the table.

The action kicked off on Friday at Amahoro Stadium, where Gasogi United hosted Kiyovu Sports. Ugandan forward Kazibwe Faizo scored the lone goal, earning Gasogi a hard-fought 1–0 victory and setting the tone for an unpredictable weekend.

On Saturday, APR FC traveled to the Northern Province for a clash against Musanze FC, but the trip turned sour for the army side. Musanze delivered a commanding performance, winning 3–2 thanks to goals from Omar Bizimungu, Shaban Hussein, and Charles Mutsinzi. APR responded through an own goal by Serge Murangamirwa and a late strike from William Togui, but it was not enough.

The loss immediately spread across social media, leaving APR supporters frustrated and confused about how their team fell to Ingagi Nkuru, the nickname of Musanze FC.

Elsewhere on Saturday, league leaders Police FC, coached by Ben Moussa, the newly crowned Be One Gin Coach of the Month, secured a 2–1 win over Gicumbi FC. Goals from Lague Byiringiro and Simeon Iradukunda sealed the victory, while Moise Lola Kanda scored Gicumbi’s consolation goal.

Marine FC also edged Gorilla FC 1–0, Amagaju FC drew 1–1 with Etincelles FC, and Rutsiro FC collected their first three points of the campaign with a 3–2 win over Bugesera FC.

On Sunday, all eyes turned to Rayon Sports, whose supporters hoped the team would capitalize on APR’s defeat when they faced AS Kigali. Instead, Rayon continued their poor run of form, falling 2–0 after goals from Olivier Dushimimana and Tharcisse Nshimiyimana. The loss increased pressure on club president Thadee Twagirayezu, with fans calling for his resignation.

In Huye, Mukura Victory Sports failed to defend their home turf, losing 2–1 to AS Muhanga. Gatera Moussa’s side walked away with all three points after a disciplined display.

Matchday eight ended with Police FC firmly at the top of the table on 20 points, followed by Musanze FC on 15. Newly admitted Al Hilal SC and Al Merrikh SC remain at the bottom of the standings with no matches played so far.
