Billiards table, one of Mount Kigali University’s socal hubs

At Mount Kigali University, beyond the rigorous academic schedule, students are discovering a unique space for relaxation and connection: the billiards table. This enduring game, a global pastime with roots tracing back to 15th-century Europe as a lawn game before evolving indoors, has found a strong foothold on campus, fostering both camaraderie and a healthy outlet for stress.

Billiards, often referred to as pool in its pocketed variations, is more than just a game of skill; it’s a social catalyst. It encourages interaction and communication, breaking down social barriers and creating an inclusive environment where individuals of all ages can engage.

While some students choose the serene campus gardens or the bustling canteen for their breaks, many gravitate towards the lively atmosphere around the billiards table. Here, conversations range from lighthearted banter to discussions about academic challenges, all within a respectful and engaging setting.

“Playing billiards after classes is my go-to for de-stressing,” shares Patrick Mugisha, a third-year hospitality student. “It requires focus, so it pulls your mind away from complicated equations, but it’s also incredibly social. You get to know people from different departments and even different years.”

Aimable Kwizera, a first-year business student, agrees, “It helps me clear my head. Sometimes, we even use the game as a way to informally discuss difficult concepts from our lessons. It’s a fun and active way to learn from each other outside the classroom.”

The popularity of billiards on campus reflects a wider trend. In Rwanda, particularly in areas like Nyamirambo in Nyarugenge District, billiards is a well-loved game that not only provides entertainment but also serves as a social hub.

For university students, it offers a crucial escape from the intensity of academic life, promoting mental well-being and combating feelings of isolation. Studies on student life consistently highlight the importance of recreational activities in improving focus, concentration, and problem-solving skills, all of which are inherently part of billiards. The game’s blend of mental strategy and precise physical execution provides a holistic benefit.

The growing enthusiasm for billiards at Mount Kigali University has led to a common aspiration among the student body. “We often have a queue for the table because so many of us want to play,” says Didier Niyigena, a second-year IT student. “It would be great if the university could add another billiards table or two. It would allow more of us to play simultaneously and avoid long waits.”
