The Rwanda Premier League returned this weekend with defending champions APR FC looking to bounce back after a slow start. But once again, they were forced to share the points in a tough away match against Rutsiro FC.
APR FC had another difficult evening after being held to a 1–1 draw by Rutsiro FC at Umuganda Stadium.
The army side started strongly and took the lead in the 32nd minute through Denis Omedi, who finished neatly after a clever pass from Kiwanuka. However, before halftime, Rutsiro FC equalised when Jean Claude Nizeyimana converted a penalty following a foul by Clement Niyigena.
In the second half, APR pushed hard for a winner, making several substitutions and creating more chances, but Rutsiro’s defence remained disciplined and compact. A late header from Togui found the net, but it was ruled out for offside, leaving APR frustrated once again.
After the match, APR coach Taleb Abderrahim admitted his side ‘created chances but lacked the final touch.’
This result marks APR’s second consecutive draw, leaving them with 8 points and sitting 7th in the Rwanda Premier League table. Meanwhile, Rutsiro FC remains bottom with just 2 points from six games. Elsewhere, Police FC also dropped points after a 1–1 draw with Mukura VS, though they still lead the standings with 16 points.
APR will look to return to winning ways in their next match, while Rutsiro hopes the draw will boost their confidence moving forward.
