Ruhango: A young man arrested for allegedly killing his grandmother with a machete

Police in Ruhango District have arrested a 19-year-old man suspected of killing his grandmother with a machete, accusing her of bewitching him.

The incident, which spread on the morning of November 14, 2025, reportedly took place in Kabuga Village, Kabuga Cell, Mbuye Sector, in Ruhango District.

Eyewitnesses said the young man went to the home of his grandmother, Mutumwinka Thérèse, 72, and hacked various parts of her body, killing her on the spot.

The Southern Province Police Spokesperson, CIP Kamanzi Hassan, told IGIHE that the suspect allegedly cut his grandmother’s legs, arms, and head, causing her death.

He said, “This young man accused his grandmother of bewitching him, which he claimed caused him mental illness. According to residents, that is the reason he used to justify killing her.”

CIP Kamanzi added that the suspect was arrested and is being held at Mbuye Police Station, while the victim’s body was taken to Kinazi Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

CIP Kamanzi expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and noted that further medical assessment would determine whether the young man indeed suffers from mental illness or if other reasons led him to commit the alleged crime, after which the appropriate legal procedures will follow.
