MTN Rwanda strengthens lead with 64% market share

MTN Rwanda has solidified its position as the country’s leading telecom operator, now holding approximately 64% of all active mobile subscriptions, according to the latest figures from the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA).

The total number of active mobile subscriptions in Rwanda stands at around 13.29 million, with MTN Rwanda’s subscriber base growing from 7.6 million to 8.1 million year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025. Active data subscribers also rose by 7.5% to 2.5 million, while active mobile money users (MoMo) increased by 12.2% to 5.8 million, supported by a merchant network of 578,000.

MTN’s total service revenue surged 14.2% to Rwf 216.2 billion, with growth largely driven by data and mobile money services. The company’s EBITDA rose 36.7% to Rwf 89.7 billion, and profit after tax jumped 222.7% to Rwf 13.3 billion. The company attributes its success to innovation, including initiatives like “Tunga Taci na MTN”, which provides affordable smartphone financing, alongside a focus on digital inclusion and service expansion.

Experts note that MTN Rwanda’s dominant position extends beyond telecom services, positioning it as a central player in the country’s digital economy ambitions. Its growth supports financial inclusion, enables mobile financial services, and bolsters business connectivity.

For consumers, this dominance could mean broader network coverage, enhanced digital services, and innovative offerings. Competitors such as Airtel Rwanda, holding roughly 36% market share, face increased pressure to differentiate through pricing, niche services, or specialized segments. Regulators and market watchers will be monitoring competition, pricing practices, and efforts to ensure the telecom sector remains fair and vibrant.

MTN’s growth also aligns with Rwanda’s vision of a knowledge-based economy, supporting technological adoption and digital services nationwide. The company’s rise to a 64% market share demonstrates strategic growth in subscribers, data, mobile finances, and digital innovation, while carrying the responsibility of promoting inclusive growth and competitive practices in the evolving Rwandan digital landscape.
