REG warns 13-hour power outage in three districts

The Rwanda Energy Group (REG) has announced a planned power outage in the districts of Gicumbi, Nyagatare, and Gatsibo, which will last from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a four-hour outage in parts of Kigali, aimed at expanding electricity networks.

In a statement released on November 11, 2025, REG explained that the outage is necessary due to maintenance work at the Gabiro Electricity Substation in Gatsibo District and along the Kibagabaga–Nyarutarama line. The scheduled outage will take place on November 15, 2025.

On that date, electricity will be off in Gatsibo, Nyagatare, and Gicumbi from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In Kigali, power will be interrupted in Remera sector of Gasabo District from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The outage will not affect all sectors within the districts. In Gatsibo, electricity will be off in Kabarore, Rugarama, Rwimbogo, Kiziguro, Kiramurizi, Murambi, Gasange, Muhura, Remera, Kageyo, Ngarama, Gatsibo, and part of Nyagihanga. In Gicumbi, the affected sectors are Bwisige, Ruvune, Giti, Muko, Bukure, Rwamiko, Rutare, Rukomo, and Nyamiyaga, as well as parts of Rushaki, Mukarange, and Mutete. In Nyagatare, all sectors will experience power outages, while in Kigali, only parts of Nyuratama cell in Remera sector will be affected.

REG has urged the public to exercise caution around electricity lines, noting that power could be restored earlier than scheduled.

The announcement follows technical problems on regional electricity networks on November 9, which caused widespread power outages across the country.
