Rwanda Fertilizer Company launches three new fertilizer types adapted to local soils

Rwanda Fertilizer Company Ltd (RFC), a local fertilizer manufacturer, has unveiled three new types of fertilizer designed to improve agricultural productivity while reducing the country’s reliance on imported fertilizers.

The launch took place on November 10, 2025, and was attended by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Ndabamenye Telesphore, the Ambassador of Morocco to Rwanda, Youssef Imani, and several other officials.

The newly launched fertilizers, named Twihaze, Ongera, and Ongera +, are the result of research conducted by the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) through the Rwanda Soil Information Services (RwaSIS) project, which identifies the quantity and type of fertilizer needed depending on regional soil characteristics.

Dr. Ndabamenye emphasized that the fertilizers were developed based on five years of research to address the diversity of Rwanda’s soils. He said, “Our country has a thousand hills, and some areas have sandy or acidic soils. To maximize productivity, it is essential to have fertilizers tailored to each district or soil type.”

RFC produced these fertilizers to match Rwanda’s soil characteristics and to suit specific crops, helping farmers apply the right nutrients to their land. Research and field trials have shown that these fertilizers can potentially triple crop yields.

Dr. Ndabamenye urged farmers to complement fertilizer use with quality seeds, pest and disease control, proper crop care, and timely irrigation to maximize productivity.

RFC CEO Annass Khanchoufi noted that the initiative addresses a long-standing issue where farmers used the same type of fertilizer across different soils, which affected productivity. He said, “These new fertilizers are an important addition that will help Rwandan farmers improve crop yields, as the country has diverse soil types.”

RFC was established in partnership with Morocco’s OCP Africa and the Government of Rwanda through Agaciro Development Fund and Agro-Processing Trust Corporate. Mortbait Marouane, OCP’s Regional Business Director for East Africa, expressed commitment to continuing such initiatives to make Rwanda a hub of agricultural development in the Great Lakes region.

Located in the Bugesera Industrial Zone, RFC officially opened in December 2023 and has an annual production capacity of 100,000 tons of fertilizer.
