The Rwanda National Police announced that Iraguha Clement, widely known for teaching people how to drive via social media, died after jumping into Muhazi Lake.
Rwanda National Police spokesperson in Kigali City, CIP Wellars Gahonzire, told IGIHE that news of ‘Teacher Clement’s’ death emerged in the evening hours of November 10, 2025.
CIP Gahonzire explained, “Yesterday, around 11 a.m., this man left Gicumbi District and went to Gasabo District, to an area known as King Fisher in Rutunga Sector. It is a well-known hotel, frequented by many people.”
Upon arrival, Iraguha rented a boat from the hotel, assuring staff that he knew how to operate it. He was provided with all necessary safety gear. About 50 meters into the water, he removed his life jacket and jumped into the lake.
“Guests and hotel staff saw him jump into the water. They tried to follow and help, but he had already sunk and drowned,” CIP Gahonzire said.
Police officers from Rutunga Station responded to the scene that evening but decided that rescue operations would continue the next morning, on November 11.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Iraguha’s death was a suicide, though the authorities continue to probe the exact circumstances that led him to jump. CIP Gahonzire noted, “Considering the way he removed the life jacket, which is meant to provide safety, and voluntarily jumped without any accident or external force, it clearly appears to be a suicide.”
The Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) reported that 602 suicide attempts were recorded in the country last year, with 51.3% involving people aged 19 to 35.
Dr. Iyamuremye Jean Damascène, head of mental health at RBC, stated in September 2025 that factors contributing to suicidal thoughts include family conflicts, lack of support, financial challenges, mental illness, depression, and chronic diseases. He urged, “Emotional suffering often remains hidden until it reaches a critical level. It is important to talk about these issues. People should not face problems alone, as simple conversations can help a person heal.”
Iraguha Clement was born in 1992. Official documents show that he resided in Muhanga District. Recovery efforts were ongoing to retrieve his body from the lake at the time of reporting.
