ISANGE service seceives over 700 survivors of abuse annually

Staff at ISANGE One Stop Center at Kabgayi Hospital told Members of Parliament that over the past three years, the service has assisted 2,271 survivors of abuse.

This information was shared during a visit by members of the Rwandan Women’s Parliamentary Forum (FFRP) and the Parliamentary Forum on Social Welfare and Development (RPRPD) to Muhanga District.

Uwizeyimana Judith, Head of ISANGE One Stop Center at Kabgayi Hospital, said that between 2022 and 2024, the center assisted 2,271 survivors, including men, women, and children subjected to gender-based violence.

“In these three years, we received 818 children in total, including boys and girls who were sexually abused while underage,” she noted.

She added that from 2023 to 2025, the center assisted 270 teenage girls who became pregnant due to sexual abuse, emphasizing that this alarming trend requires urgent action.

Eric Bizimana, Deputy Director in charge of Economic Development in Muhanga District, told UMUSEKE that ISANGE One Stop Center collaborates with RIB officers to investigate suspected offenders.

“Many perpetrators have been brought to justice, and the effort continues until all cases are fully resolved,” he said.

MP Kalisa Jean Sauveur highlighted that public awareness campaigns aim to educate citizens about the new laws governing individuals and families, and to teach youth about reproductive health.

“Even one case of abuse is a serious problem. No one should be subjected to abuse; we must unite against perpetrators, as this is a struggle that concerns us all,” he said.

While the number of child and adult abuse cases is concerning, Kalisa noted that many accused individuals are currently facing trial.

ISANGE One Stop Center at Kabgayi was established in 2014 and has since assisted 244,922 people from Muhanga, Kamonyi, Ruhango, and Ngororero Districts.

During a two-day visit, MPs engaged in discussions with district officials, Kabgayi Hospital, Gitarama Health Center, and visited teenage mothers in Cyeza Sector as well as youth centers in Nyamabuye Sector.
