Ingabire Marie-Immaculée honored with outstanding achievement award in journalism

The Rwanda media fraternity has posthumously honored Ingabire Marie-Immaculée with an award recognizing her outstanding contribution to the development and advancement of the journalism industry in Rwanda.

The award was received by her daughter on Friday, November 7, 2025, during a ceremony celebrating journalists who excelled in the year 2025.

Media oversight institutions in Rwanda, including the Association of Rwandan Journalists (ARJ), the Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), and the Association of Female Journalists (ARFEM), praised Ingabire’s remarkable role in strengthening ethical journalism and advocating for media development.

Ingabire Marie-Immaculée passed away on October 9, 2025, at the age of 63. Throughout her journalism career, she worked for several institutions, including the former ORINFOR—now Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA)—before later serving as the Executive Director of the Rwanda branch of Transparency International.

Emmanuel Habumuremyi, Secretary-General of ARJ, described her as a courageous journalist committed to truth and service to the country.

“She was a role model in speaking the truth throughout her life and career. She was truthful, hardworking, and devoted,” he said.

He further noted that Ingabire played a significant role in rebuilding constructive journalism after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, as one of the founding members of ARJ and RFM, and later serving as the first Vice-President of the Media High Council in 2003.

Dan Nkurunziza, President of ARJ, announced the association will contribute 2 million Rwandan Francs to support the foundation established in her honor.
