Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has revealed that she once struggled with cigarette addiction but decided to stop after realizing it was affecting her voice.
Speaking on the “With Chude” show hosted by Chude Jideonwo, Alade said she started smoking while in university out of curiosity. What began as occasional smoking soon became a habit.
“I was getting addicted to that lifestyle,” she said. She explained that she even felt the need to smoke before sleeping and had to hide it from people, which made her uncomfortable.
Alade said she became worried when she noticed smoking was damaging her voice, which is the most important part of her career. She then set a rule for herself: “If I have to hide to do something, I will not do it.”
This decision helped her quit the habit completely after less than a year.
Her openness about the experience is seen as a message to young fans about the risks of smoking and the importance of making healthy choices. Many praised her for speaking honestly about her past and how she overcame the problem.
