Rwamagana: The Institute of Women for Excellence hit by fire

The Institute of Women for Excellence (IWE), a girls’ school located in Kigabiro Sector, Rwamagana District, Eastern Province, was struck by a fire on the morning of Monday, November 3, 2025.

While the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed, most of it occurred in the student dormitory, which houses around 150 students.

Students and nearby residents reported the incident to local authorities, prompting the district’s Fire Brigade, part of the Rwanda National Police, to respond quickly. Their timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the school.

According to the school administration, all items inside the affected dormitory were destroyed. This includes clothing, beds, mattresses, and other essential items used daily by the students.

Despite the extensive damage, the school confirmed that no students were injured or suffered any additional harm from the fire.

At the time of reporting, security agencies had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, while school management focused on assisting students in replacing the basic items they lost.

The Institute’s administration assured that, in collaboration with local authorities and parents, efforts will be made to restore normal school life and help students recover what was lost.
