The Burundi National Defence Forces (FDNB) have showcased the country’s first-ever locally manufactured military vehicle, which the army says is resistant to bullets.
The armored vehicle was presented on October 27, 2025, to Defense Minister Marie Chantal Nijimbere and retired military officers.
The unveiling took place during a tour led by the Chief of Defense Forces, General Prime Niyongabo, as they visited various units within the Burundian military structure.
The delegation toured the headquarters of the land forces, air force, naval guards responsible for the lake borders, and facilities for demobilized soldiers.
Minister Nijimbere, who is the first woman to hold the defense portfolio in Burundi, was accompanied by several senior generals. She also visited the military court and the prosecutor’s office.
The new vehicle, fully produced by the FDNB, bears the army’s official plate number “FDNB.” Officials indicated that although it has not yet been deployed for road operations, it was built using materials sourced domestically.
Reactions on social media have been mixed. While many hailed the innovation and progress made by FDNB, others criticized its appearance, saying its design lacks appeal and resembles vehicles assembled in small local garages.
Minister Nijimbere said Burundi should take pride in reaching the capability of assembling a bulletproof vehicle, calling it a significant milestone. She commended the army for conducting its duties professionally and in line with the law, adding that some of their achievements deserve international recognition.
She reaffirmed that the role of the armed forces is to work tirelessly—day and night—so citizens can trust them and continue with their activities in a secure environment.
