During the month dedicated to volunteerism, youth from Rwanda’s Northern Province participated in various community activities valued at more than 65 million Rwandan francs.
The figures were announced on October 29, 2025, during a ceremony held to recognize young volunteers for their role in combating drug abuse through day and night patrols. In appreciation of their efforts, some were rewarded with cows.
The announcement followed a special community service (umuganda) event marking the end of the Month of Volunteerism in the Northern Province.
Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Jackline Urujeni, Head of the Rwanda National Police Volunteer Coordination Office, commended the youth in Musanze District’s Gacaca Sector for organizing patrols to monitor and prevent the sale of narcotics and other illegal goods.
CSP Urujeni stated, “We commend the way youth volunteers collaborate with various institutions, including security organs, in maintaining safety and identifying potential threats. Continue your good work because no citizen can enjoy well-being without security.”
The Governor of the Northern Province, Maurice Mugabowagahunde, also praised the youth for their outstanding contribution to improving community welfare.
He said, “You are the strength of our nation and the hope of tomorrow. I thank you for your dedication and selflessness in promoting the well-being and development of citizens. The activities you carry out play a crucial role in building the Rwanda we aspire to.”
Peter Ndayisaba, the Coordinator of Youth Volunteers in the Northern Province, explained that their spirit of volunteerism is inspired by the courage and patriotism of the young soldiers of the former Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) who liberated the country.
He said, “My colleagues and I will continue to demonstrate the same dedication and commitment we showed this month because we draw inspiration from the bravery of the young RPA soldiers who sacrificed everything to liberate Rwanda.”
Throughout the Month of Volunteerism, youth in the Northern Province planted 8,000 agroforestry trees and helped vulnerable families by constructing houses, latrines, and kitchen gardens.
