In a landmark move for regional football cooperation, two of Sudan’s most decorated clubs, Al-Merrikh SC and Al Hilal Omdurman, have officially been cleared to participate in the 2025/26 Rwanda Premier League season, following approval from the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA).
The two club giants announced the news late on Thursday, October 23, through statements released on their official social media platforms. Both clubs confirmed that they had received formal letters from FERWAFA permitting them to compete in Rwanda’s top-tier league starting in November 2025. “On Thursday, October 23, 2025, Al-Merrikh Club received an official letter from FERWAFA authorizing the team to play in the Rwanda Premier League for the 2025/2026 season, beginning in November,” the club’s statement read. Similarly, Al Hilal Omdurman confirmed, “Al Hilal has received a letter from the Rwanda Football Federation granting approval to compete in the Rwanda Premier League.
”The approval follows a joint request submitted by three Sudanese clubs, Al-Merrikh, Al Hilal Omdurman, and Al Ahli SC Wad Madan, seeking temporary participation in the Rwandan league after domestic football in Sudan was suspended in April 2023 due to the ongoing civil conflict. According to FERWAFA, the inclusion of the Sudanese sides will comply with both national football regulations and FIFA guidelines governing cross-border participation.
The federation also requested that Al-Merrikh formally notify the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of its relocation for the season. Discussions between CAF and the Sudan Football Association are underway to finalize all administrative requirements.
Al-Merrikh, now under the leadership of Serbian coach Darko Novic, formerly with Rwanda’s APR FC, is expected to bring a wealth of continental experience to the competition. Al Hilal Omdurman, one of Africa’s most successful clubs with a passionate fanbase, is also anticipated to boost the league’s visibility and competitiveness.
