From APR to NBA: Fenan joins Houston Rockets staff for summer league

Former APR men’s coaching staff member Fenan Atobrhan will join the Houston Rockets during the NBA 2K26 Summer League, making her debut in their opening game against the LA Clippers on Friday, July 11, in Las Vegas.

The Eritrean coach, who is licensed by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), was selected through a development program for African coaches run by the NBA and Basketball Africa League (BAL). She is expected to join the Houston Rockets coaching staff, a team competing in the Southwest Division of the NBA’s Western Conference.

Fenan became a certified coach at just 16 years old while living in Germany. She signed her first professional coaching contract in December 2022 with Tigers BBC, later joining APR, Rwanda’s 2024 men’s basketball league champions.

“I am really excited to be joining the Houston Rockets. We are excited to see what the group will achieve in this league,” she told Times Sports in a phone call interview.

At the Rockets, Fenan will serve on the coaching staff led by head coach Garrett Jackson. The team also made headlines in the 2025 NBA Draft, selecting South Sudanese prospect Khaman Maluach with the 10th overall pick, before trading him to the Phoenix Suns.

According to the NBA Summer League schedule, after the game against the Clippers, Houston will face the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, July 13, the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, July 14, and the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday, July 17.

All 30 NBA teams will play at least five games in the NBA 2K26 Summer League. After four games, the top four teams will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, July 19. The remaining 26 teams will play a fifth game on July 18, 19, or 20, while the two semifinal winners will meet in the championship game on Sunday, July 20.
