According to CNN, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call on Thursday, calling for calm as tensions rise between Israel and Iran. This comes as U.S. President Donald Trump considers involving America in the conflict.
Russia strongly condemned Israel’s military actions, calling them a violation of international law. China, however, took a softer approach. Xi urged both sides, especially Israel, to stop fighting immediately.
Xi also sent a veiled message to Trump, reminding major powers to help ease tensions, not escalate them.
Some Chinese experts blame Trump’s unpredictable Middle East policy for increasing instability in the region. China has significant interests in Iran, a key regional power that challenges U.S. influence. In 2023, China brokered peace talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia, showing its growing diplomatic ambitions.
Both China and Russia are offering to mediate in the Israel-Iran conflict. But China still lacks the practical experience and influence to resolve such complex issues, as seen in its limited results during the Gaza conflict.
Still, presenting itself as a peace-seeking power while U.S. leadership faces criticism could help China gain valuable diplomatic influence, especially among Global South countries.
