Mount Kigali University lines up new infrastructure expansion projects

Mount Kigali is moving ahead with additional infrastructure projects following the completion of the new tuition block. The university’s founder, Professor Simon Gicharu, recently revealed that additional developments are underway, including the construction of a hostel facility with a capacity of over 800 students and a new state-of-the-art classroom block.

These infrastructure projects are part of the university’s broader strategy to enhance academic delivery, student accommodation, and institutional growth.

During a luncheon held with the staff of Mount Kigali University, officials from Kigali Paramount Hotel, and Royal FM, Professor Gicharu emphasized that the university’s infrastructure vision is not merely about physical buildings, but about creating a legacy of academic excellence and community transformation.

“We are not just expanding buildings for the sake of it. Every new classroom, every facility, every hostel is part of a bigger plan to enhance academic quality and improve student and staff welfare,” said Prof. Gicharu.

The new classroom block, currently in the foundation stage behind the existing structures, is designed with sustainability and student-centered learning in mind. It will incorporate energy-efficient systems, eco-friendly materials, and features such as ample natural lighting, improved ventilation, and green spaces. These design elements aim to create a modern, comfortable, and inspirational environment for both students and faculty.

Reflecting on MKUR’s transformation journey, Prof. Gicharu shared his perspective

“I recently looked at an old photograph of this campus before we began the development projects, and comparing it to what we see today, the transformation is truly inspiring. The beautiful buildings that now stand are not only physical structures, but symbols of purpose and vision.”

As part of his recent visit to Rwanda, Professor Gicharu paid a courtesy call to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Cooperation, Gen. (Rtd) James Kabarebe. Their meeting centered on the importance of investing in education infrastructure as a key strategy to position Rwanda as a hub for international students.

The book details how the University changed its name from Mount Kenya University.

In addition, the varsity founder was joined by the Director General of Rwanda’s Imbuto Foundation, Ms. Elodie Shami, in touring the newly completed Early Childhood Development (ECD) tuition block in Masaka, Kicukiro District.

The facility is one of several ECD centers constructed through a collaborative partnership between Mount Kigali University and the Imbuto Foundation. These centers are expected to play a critical role in increasing access to early childhood education across the region. Also present during the visit were DEA Mr. Mutsinzi Antoine and Engineer Jimmy Gakwaya.
