Gender-based violence (GBV), has long been an insidious issue in society; often relegated to whispers and silence.
However, with the annual “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign” initiated by UN Women, the world once again rallies together from November 25th to December 10th, aiming to spotlight this crucial issue and inspire collective action against it.
In a passionate call to action against GBV, Florence Kudembe, the Guild president of Mount Kigali University Rwanda (MKUR) has challenged journalism students to utilize their communication skills as a force for positive change, by amplifying the voices of survivors, counter damaging narratives, and advocating for a university free from GBV.
“Let us stand united against all forms of violence; Our collective voice can challenge stereotypes, spread awareness, and instigate lasting change, fostering empowered and protected communities,” she stressed.
Since 1991, the campaign has served as a clarion call for governments, NGOs, and individuals worldwide to raise awareness and combat GBV in its multifaceted forms, including: domestic violence, intimate partner violence, femicide, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), sexual violence, child marriage, and online harassment, among others.
This year’s theme: “Unite, Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls,” underscores the urgent need to prioritize and safeguard the rights of women and girls, shielding them from physical, mental, and economic ramifications of GBV.
Through collectively raising awareness, deepening understanding, and inspiring action, Kudembe believes they can cultivate a more inclusive and respectful Global community in addressing this critical issue.
Recognizing that combatting GBV is not a responsibility of a selected few, the call extends to individuals across various fields and domains.
