Journalism Universities lectures from four universities are participating in a five-day social-media training at Hotel Virunga in Musanze.
The training is part of capacity building to enhance and professionalize media in Rwanda. The training is being conducted by Mr. James Munyaneza, MD & Chief-Editor The New Times Publication, and Mr. Jean Claude, Multi-Media editor RBA.
“The main objective of the training is to familiarize journalism lecturers with various social media platforms and online newspapers. It is aimed at equipping participants with best practices for creating engaging and impactful content for these platforms. Through practical instruction, attendees will learn how to write effectively for social media and online newspapers, and how to use these platforms to reach a wider audience and disseminate news.” Says the Rwanda Media Programme university coordinator, Assoumani Ntakirutimana
The participating lecturers said that the training came at the appropriate time when the world is witnessing a shift in social media usage.
” This training is vital for us lecturers who teach students about online journalism. I have gained a lot in training the future multi-media journalist, especially on the headlining, use of snippets, hyperlinking, and embedding videos.” Said the acting associate Dean, Mass Media, and Communication at Mount Kigali University.
Pax-Press Rwanda says the role of training is to incorporate the skills acquired into their teaching.
The Rwanda media programme involves four universities in Rwanda offering Journalism. The four universities are Mount Kigali University (MKUR), East Africa University of Rwanda(EAUR), Catholic Institute of Kabgayi(ICK), and University of Rwanda(UR). The RMP was launched in 2021.
