7 hours on the phone: How a business call became a love story for Rwandan gospel artist

What began as a routine business discussion about music and career growth unexpectedly blossomed into a seven-hour conversation about life, values, and destiny for Rwandan gospel artists Sharon Gatete and Chryso Ndasigwa. This extraordinary phone call, a pivotal moment in their nine-year acquaintance, would ultimately redefine their relationship and lead them to the altar.

The couple is now set to exchange vows on November 22, 2025, marking a union forged not through conventional dating but through shared purpose, spiritual principles, and what they describe as divine timing.

A connection forged in faith and parallel paths

Their story traces back to 2015, when regulatory issues led to the temporary closure of Chryso’s church. His team began renting space at the church Sharon attended, where she served as a worship leader. Chryso, then a diligent pianist known for his humility, recalls being captivated by Sharon’s powerful voice after services. Though their paths briefly converged, a deep connection did not immediately form.

Their musical journeys, however, continued in parallel. Sharon pursued formal music education, while Chryso launched a successful solo career, gaining recognition for hit songs like “Wahozeho.”

In 2023, seeking guidance for her own musical endeavors, Sharon reached out to Chryso for a business meeting. Chryso meticulously prepared, but the meeting was abruptly canceled by Shalon due to a family emergency, leaving him disheartened.

Despite this initial setback, their connection gradually deepened through various mutual events. A surprising discovery further cemented their bond: Chryso had previously worshipped alongside Shalon’s father in a workplace ministry.

A four-hour bus ride to a mutual friend’s wedding, despite Chryso’s aversion to long-distance travel, provided an unexpected opportunity for extended conversation, planting a new seed in their burgeoning friendship.

The seven-hour call: A turning point

The true turning point arrived after Chryso’s Easter Experience concert. Sharon, who was in Kenya at the time and missed the event, later released a new song. Noticing a lack of vigorous promotion, Chryso called her for what he intended to be a brief business check-in. This call, however, extended to an astonishing seven hours.

As the discussion moved beyond the song, it naturally delved into personal lives, relationships, and unmet expectations. Sharon candidly asked Chryso why, despite his success, he remained unmarried. Chryso reciprocated the question, leading to a vulnerable exchange about their standards, desires, and faith.

Sharon articulated her “Four Fs” for choosing a life partner: Faith (a shared spiritual foundation), Fundamentals (aligned values and vision for life), Friends (the positive influence of their inner circle), and Family (compatibility and acceptance within their respective families).

Intrigued, Chryso probed deeper. As the hours passed, both began to realize that they had found these very qualities in each other.

From friendship to forever

By the end of the marathon call, they agreed to continue their conversations and seek divine guidance regarding their future. Sharon later shared that she had been praying for a partner who met her stated standards, and the profound sense of peace she experienced after that conversation served as her confirmation.

Months later, their friendship evolved into a purposeful relationship built on transparency, a shared calling in gospel music, and mutual respect. Their relationship, which began in July 2024 and was kept private for almost a year, became public with their traditional introduction ceremony on June 22, 2025.

Chryso proposed to Sharon on June 25, 2025, and they were officially introduced to their church congregation at Newlife Bible Church Kicukiro on June 29, 2025. Their wedding is now scheduled for November 22, 2025.

Their unique love story joins those of other celebrated gospel couples, such as Fabrice & Maya and James & Daniella, underscoring that modern relationships can indeed be rooted in prayer, purpose, and patience.

“We didn’t plan to fall in love on a phone call,” Chryso shared with a laugh. “But when the conversation is right, you stop talking business and start talking destiny.”
