The Rwanda National Police has announced the arrest of 11 people suspected of involvement in a series of cattle thefts reported in different parts of Kigali.
The incidents have been concentrated in Gasabo District, specifically in the sectors of Gikomero, Ndera, Rusororo, and Rutunga, since October this year.
Police, working in collaboration with other security organs, local authorities, and members of the public, confirmed that the suspects are linked to the theft of six cows.
According to police reports, most of the thefts occurred in Gikomero Sector, particularly in the cells of Minini, Gicaca, and Kibara, where stolen cows were slaughtered and later sold in Fumbwe Sector of Rwamagana District, a known livestock market.
CIP Wellars Gahonzire, the Rwanda National Police Spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that four of the stolen cows have been recovered, thanks to community cooperation, while the other two had already been slaughtered.
Some of the suspects have already appeared in court, while others are still under investigation.
CIP Gahonzire commended residents who provided information that led to the arrests:
“We thank the residents who helped ensure these suspects were caught. We encourage the public to continue sharing information because many of these criminals operate within the communities and people are sometimes reluctant to report them,” he said.
He also urged caution toward individuals going door-to-door claiming to buy cattle, warning that some may be scouting homes for theft.
“People should be very careful about anyone asking to buy cows at home. They might be criminals who want to locate where livestock is kept and gather information on the owners,” he added.
Police warned those engaged in livestock theft to stop immediately, noting that security organs and communities are alert and monitoring their activities. Investigations to identify and arrest additional suspects are ongoing.
