MKU students redefine campus life with innovation and hustle

Mount Kigali University students are making waves by blending academics, entrepreneurship, and creativity, redefining what it means to be a university student in Rwanda today. Across campus, students are finding innovative ways to balance their studies with social life, part-time jobs, and business ventures, showing resilience in an increasingly competitive environment.

Many students are turning to social media and digital tools to generate income, develop skills, and gain real-world experience while pursuing their degrees. From small businesses to online initiatives, campus life has become a hub of creativity and enterprise.

Muhoza Dorcas, a Business Management student who works in sales at BM Gadgets, says, “Balancing classes and work is challenging, but it’s helping me develop time management skills and real business experience. I feel more prepared for the world beyond campus.”

Irakoze Sabin, a BBICT student working in protocol, adds, “Being involved in different initiatives on campus has taught me professionalism and how to interact with people from all walks of life. I’m learning skills that textbooks alone can’t teach.”

Nshuti Salua, a Hospitality and Tourism student who also works as a tour guide, notes, “The practical experience I gain through guiding tourists while studying has been invaluable. It’s exciting to combine learning with hands-on work and creativity.”

Beyond academics, students are demonstrating strong community spirit, helping one another manage financial pressures, family responsibilities, and mental health challenges. Clubs, mentorship programs, and collaborative projects are thriving, reflecting a campus culture that values solidarity and mutual support.

Dean of Students Uwimana Lucy emphasizes, “Our students are not only excelling academically, but they are also entrepreneurial, innovative, and compassionate. We are committed to creating programs and opportunities that support their growth and encourage them to become leaders in society.”

University officials have praised the students for their initiative, noting that their energy and creativity are helping to shape a dynamic and supportive learning environment. Plans are underway to expand extracurricular opportunities and mentorship programs to further encourage student innovation and personal development.

Mount Kigali University is increasingly being recognized not just as a center for education, but as a place where young people grow as thinkers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, ready to make an impact both locally and internationally.
